THE MYSTERY OF THE GAZE: YELENA YEMCHUK AND THE NAPLES MEDUSA

Yelena Yemchuk (artist and photographer) and Francesca Todde (publisher, Départ pour l'image)

4pm - 5pm

Shot in Naples during the summer of 2026, Yelena Yemchuk's latest project takes its inspiration from a remarkable fourth-century BC carved and painted head of Medusa, preserved in the Hypogeum of the Cristallini, an ancient burial complex dating back more than 2,300 years.

In her new book, Yemchuk imagines Medusa emerging from the underworld to accompany her through the streets of Naples. Moving between myth and everyday life, past and present, her photographs explore the mystery and power of the gaze, the tension between seeing and being seen, and the unsettling beauty of human encounters.

A journey through a city where ancient mythology seems to inhabit the present, the book is, above all, an ode to women. Yelena Yemchuk will discuss the project with publisher Francesca Todde, presenting the book to an American audience for the first time.

A book signing will follow.
